🌊 Plans for The Water District and New ISHOF Take Shape
🏖️ Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Transformation Continues
For almost a decade, Fort Lauderdale has been reshaping its beach through significant public and private investment. New developments, including the Four Seasons and Marina Village, have opened their doors, while the city has completed major projects such as the Aquatic Center renovation, Oceanside Park, and the reimagined D.C. Alexander Park.
The next phase of this transformation is The Water District, a major waterfront destination designed to celebrate Fort Lauderdale’s unique connection to the water and further enhance the city’s reputation as a global aquatic destination.
🌊 What Is The Water District?
Located on the same peninsula as the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center, The Water District is planned as a $220 million waterfront destination that will combine:
- 🏊 Aquatic sports history
- 🐠 Marine education
- 🌴 Public gathering spaces
- 🍽️ Dining and entertainment
- 🎨 Public art
- ✈️ Tourism attractions
The project is scheduled to open in late 2028 and will be funded through a public-private partnership with privately funded construction.

The attraction is designed to educate visitors about marine ecosystems, scientific research, and responsible ocean stewardship.

These additions are intended to create a destination that serves both residents and visitors while highlighting Fort Lauderdale’s waterfront lifestyle.
🤝 Community Feedback Influenced the Design
City officials state that public input played an important role in shaping the project. Design revisions were made to:
- 👀 Better preserve views of the Aquatic Center dive tower
- 🏗️ Scale back portions of the western building
- 🌴 Maintain the character of Fort Lauderdale Beach
The final design seeks to balance new development with preservation of existing landmarks and community priorities.
🏊 Building on Fort Lauderdale’s Aquatic Legacy
The Water District will complement the recently renovated Aquatic Center, which has become a recognizable city landmark and host venue for international aquatic competitions. Its iconic 27-meter dive tower has become a symbol of Fort Lauderdale’s commitment to aquatic sports and excellence.
Combined with the city’s long aquatic history dating back to the Casino Pool era, officials believe the Water District and Aquatic Center will help position Fort Lauderdale as a leading destination for aquatic sports and marine experiences worldwide.
🌧️ Stormwater Improvements Planned for Melrose Manors and Riverland
🏗️ Fortify Lauderdale Expands Flood Protection Efforts
As part of the city’s Fortify Lauderdale initiative, major infrastructure improvements are planned for the Melrose Manors and Riverland neighborhoods to improve drainage and reduce flooding risks.
🚧 Planned Infrastructure Upgrades
The project includes:
- 📏 21 miles of drainage pipe
- 💧 1,200 drainage structures
- ♻️ 2 water-quality structures
- ⚙️ 2 stormwater pump stations
- 🚰 Relocation of water and sewer lines
- 🌱 Swale improvements
These upgrades are intended to improve stormwater management, protect homes, and better prepare the city for heavy rainfall and rising groundwater levels.
📅 Project Timeline
The project is currently in the design phase, with work underway on:
- 📋 Drainage easements
- 🔧 Utility coordination
- 📝 Permitting
The city is exploring a public-private partnership approach that could accelerate completion, potentially delivering the project by July 2028, up to three years faster than traditional government construction methods.
🌦️ Part of a Larger Flood Mitigation Strategy
Melrose Manors and Riverland will join neighborhoods such as River Oaks and Edgewood that have already received drainage and flood-control improvements. City officials say future infrastructure investments will continue across Fort Lauderdale, with priority given to neighborhoods most vulnerable to flooding and extreme weather events.
